NOTE:LASH is less invasive than a Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy (LAVH) please see Forms of Hysterectomies
The Operation
LaSH is performed under general anaesthesia. Three incisions are made to the abdomen. One for the optic scope at naval and two at the pubic hairline for the operating instruments.
(see diagram 1)
The surgeon detaches the body of the uterus (see diagram 2) from ligaments, fallopian tubes, ovaries and cervix. The uterus is removed through one of the incisions. The cervix however remains in place and is not removed as in other hysterectomies. (see diagram 1)
After coagulation of the cervical canal the wounds are closed. The operation can last from between 1 and 3 hours.
